Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Game Gameboy Advance Box

The first Harry Potter game on the Gameboy Advance is a neat rendition of Harry's world in the form of a top-down puzzler. Fairly straightforward eight way directional movement and a simple spell mechanism make playing elementary, whist complex puzzles and demanding enemies make it a tricky game to master. The game presents Hogwarts well, and the school's layout will be familiar to die-hard Potter fans. Several characters appear in the game, with Harry's friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger popping up regularly as they accompany you in unravelling the mysteries of your first year at Hogwarts.

As you progress through the game you attend various classes, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Charms, Herbology and Potions. In each class, along with other places, you learn the spells which will get you through the game. Repeating the movements of the spell earns you house points, more for each level of difficulty. As any Potter fan knows, there's nothing quite so central to life at Hogwarts as House Points. Strive to place Griffindor ahead of the inevitably second place Slytherins. Various challenges will be presented to you along the way, with hazards coming mainly in the forms of pitfalls which spell instant death, and enemies who will drain your stamina. Stamina is regained by finding and eating Bertie Bott's Every-Flavour Beans, no matter what they taste like. This is perhaps the only time you'll ever be happy to find an earwax flavoured sweet.

A diverting game, accurately fashioned in the image of Harry Potter, it does very well with the limited resources of the GBA. Never particularly immersive, it nonetheless delivers in terms of playability. For once a licence has been properly translated into a game worth playing.
