The part of Parvati Patil (one of the Patil twins) was played by Sitara Shah in the third film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. But in the forthcoming Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Warner Bros chose to recast for the role. Casting director Shaheen Baig spent time visiting schools in the Bradford area searching for the perfect pair of Asian girls to play the characters Parvati and Padma. Miss Baig - who has worked on several other big-name films including Love Actually, Billy Elliot, The Others and Anita & Me - said at the time: "I'll take all this material away and decide who we'll call back to the second wave of drama workshops. From then it's just a process of elimination and auditions will become smaller and smaller until we pick the final two girls."

The casting process continued on December 21, 2003 at Pineapple Studios, London. Shaheen Baig said, "In this book they are actually written as twins but it has been incredibly difficult to find Asian twin girls so we decided to open it up and just find two girls. We're looking for two girls, if they happen to be sisters that would be amazing, but it doesn't really matter. We just want two good girls who have fantastic chemistry." In the end the part of Parvati went to Shefali Chowdhury, while Afshan Azad won the role of her twin sister Padma. Both girls have major scenes opposite the film's main stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint because they play Harry and Ron's dates for the Yule Ball.

Shefali Chowdhury's character Parvati Patil is a dark-haired Gryffindor girl in Harry Potter's year. Parvati is described by Harry's friend Seamus Finnigan as "the most beautiful girl in the year," along with her twin sister Padma Patil (a Ravenclaw). Parvati goes with Harry Potter to the Yule Ball, since his crush, Cho Chang, was going with Cedric Diggory. Parvati wears a shocking pink dress robe with her hair in a plait braided with gold. She shares her dormitory at Hogwarts with Hermione Granger and Lavender Brown.She has many friends, including her closest friend Lavender Brown. Her favourite class is Divination with Professor Trelawney, although she also enjoyed her Care of Magical Creatures lessons with Professor Grubbly-Plank.
