Sean Biggerstaff is the actor who plays Oliver Wood in the first two Harry Potter films. This page contains a biography, links and access to some great Sean Biggerstaff pictures.

Sean Biggerstaff was born on 15th March 1983 in Glasgow. He grew up with his parents in a small area of Glasgow called Maryhill. He went to school in Milngavie (pronounced Millguy) just outside of Glasgow and joined the local drama group, the Maryhill Youth Theatre, when he was just seven. By the age of ten, Biggerstaff was committed to acting. He auditioned for Macbeth, and ended up working for the Royal Shakepeare company. Encouraged, Sean Biggerstaff joined the renowned Scottish Youth Theatre (SYT) at the age of 11. It was at SYT he met Paul Kelly and others, who later formed a group called Crambo when Biggerstaff was 15. He performed with the band, playing bass guitar and vocals for two years before he left in November 1999.

In 1996 (aged 13) Sean Biggerstaff landed his first major role, playing Darren in 'The Crow Road'. However, it was in 1997 at the age of 14 when he got his break. Alan Rickman had watched Biggerstaff perform in "Macbeth". Rickman was so impressed, he cast Biggerstaff in his new movie, The Winter Guest (starring Emma Thompson) as Tom, a mischievious schoolboy. Soon afterward, Rickman recommended Sean Biggerstaff to the London acting agency ICM. Within a week, the Harry Potter castings were being distributed. During auditions the directors suggested that he looked at the part of Oliver Wood, Sean looked at the script and agreed.

Sean Biggerstaff's character Oliver Wood is the captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team in the first three books. Wood is very determined to win the Quidditch cup and has a reputation for working the team too hard, which is well deserved. He is more concerned with winning than the well-being of his team, doing such things as making them practise in the pouring rain and telling Harry to "get the Snitch or die trying." When Harry joined the team as the youngest Seeker in a century, he thought the cup was in the bag but due to unfortunate coincidences, the Gryffindor team didn't win the Quidditch cup until Wood's final year at Hogwart's.

When Sean Biggerstaff was asked about his character, he said, "He's very sporty, slightly eccentric and very passionate about Quidditch. Wanting to win the Quidditch House Cup is like the Holy Grail for him." When asked if he was anything like him, he said, "I can relate to the desire to win, but I'm not as competitive. Oliver's got more of a "winning is everything" attitude. And he's a bit more of an oddball than I am."

Sean has also said that he got on well with all the cast on the first two films, Daniel Radcliffe in particular, " They were great. There was a surprisingly low brat-factor. Daniel (Radcliffe, who plays Harry) is fantastic and very smart. He's got his head well screwed on." Although his character makes an appearance during the third Harry Potter book, due to time constraints Oliver Wood was cut from the third film. When asked about not returning to the part in Azkaban Sean Biggerstaff said "I got a lot of condolences from people but I wasn't all that bothered - that's not to say that I didn't enjoy doing it. But in this line of work if you don't want to end up a quivering wreck you have to discipline yourself into not getting upset about things."
