Timothy Sydney Robert Hardy was born on October 29, 1925 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. He studied at Oxford University, under the great British author C.S. Lewis and graduated with honours. In 1949, he joined the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre at Stratford-upon-Avon. His theatrical training prepared him for roles in many Shakespeare productions and a live TV production of Henry V. While training, he developed rhetorical skills. He put his skill to good use when he narrated and hosted such documentaries as "Castle Ghosts of Ireland," "Horses in Our Blood," and "The Piccardy Affair."
His classical training has allowed him to slip into many historical characters, such as Prince Albert, Winston Churchill and Nazi foreign minister Joachim Von RibbenTrop. Over the years, Robert Hardy has played a huge range of parts on television and film, but has never become widely known outside the UK. Perhaps his most successful role was that of Siegfried Farnon in the long-running All Creatures Great and Small (1978 - 1990). The original series of 41 episodes was a beautifully accurate interpretation of the popular James Herriott books.
He has played Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester in Elizabeth R, and Prince Albert in Edward the Seventh (aka Edward the King) and had a part in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in 1994. In 1995 he took a leading role in film version of Sense and Sensibility. His most recent role has been as Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge in 2002's Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. He reprised the role in 2004 in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azakaban and will play him again in the Goblet of Fire.
An interesting fact is that while playing Henry V, Robert Hardy developed an interest in medieval warfare. He later wrote and presented an acclaimed television documentary on the subject of the Battle of Agincourt. and was one of the experts consulted by the archaeologists responsible for raising the Mary Rose. Robert Hardy was appointed CBE in the 1981 Queen's Birthday Honours list and elected to the FSA in 1990.
