The Rita Skeeter Page contains information on the trouble making reporter who works for 'The Daily prophet'. There is a biography, links and Rita Skeeter pictures.

Rita Skeeter is a somewhat stereotypical reporter, who specializes in yellow journalism. Working for 'The Daily Prophet' she goes to extreme lengths for a good story, and proves herself a nuisance to Harry and his friends throughout Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Harry first encountered Rita when she was planning to write an article about the Triwizard Tournament. When they took pictures for the article she asked for separate pictures of all the champions. In starting her interview with Harry, she began by giving a brief description of herself: Attractive blonde Rita Skeeter, forty-three, whose savage quill has punctured many inflated reputations.

Her article about the tournament turned out to be mostly about Harry. A picture of Harry's face took up the front page, and she replaced Harry's answer in her interview with those of her own invention, making it seem that he wanted attention. She stretched facts to make Harry seem like a tragic hero. The other Triwizard champions' names (misspelled) were squeezed in at the end of the article, and Cedric Diggory (the other Hogwarts champion) wasn't mentioned at all. Her article made life very hard for Harry, and Dumbledore banned her from the grounds. Rita also interviewed Hagrid, in an attempt to get information about Harry, which Hagrid wouldn't provide.

Rita Skeeter, who is, in fact, an unregistered Animagus who can turn into a beetle, decided to get revenge on Hagrid by coming to Hogwarts during the Yule Ball, and spying on him while transformed into a beetle. She overheard Hagrid tell Madame Maxime that he was half-giant, and printed a story about it, which made him extremely unpopular, due to the well-documented ferocious nature of giants. She made it seem as though Hagrid was dangerous, so much so that Hagrid became severely depressed and nearly resigned.

"Skeeter" is slang for mosquito, which is a clear reference to her Animagus form, as well as her very annoying nature. It may also be a subtle reference to paparazzi, which is a dialectical Italian word for a buzzing insect. J. K. Rowling considered putting Rita, who was then called Bridget, in the first book for the scene where Harry enters the Leaky Cauldron on his way to Diagon Alley. Rowling cut the character and decided to move her to the fourth book. However, Rowling notes she was reluctant to write the character when the time came, fearing people would believe it to be a response to her own fame. However, she did write the character and has noted that meeting with real journalists did make it more fun.
