Myrtle attended Hogwarts during the time when Tom Riddle a.k.a. Voldemort attended the school. Tom Riddle, being Slytherin's heir, found and opened the Chamber of Secrets in the school, unleashing the Basilisk (a giant snake) on the school. We assume by the following proceedings that Myrtle came from a Muggle family, or perhaps one of her parents was a Muggle; as the Basilisk's job is to the rid the school of all of those who are not 'pure' blood. It also could just be a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Either way, the story stays the same. Myrtle ran into the bathroom to cry because Olive Hornby had just made fun of her glasses. Locked in her stall, 'moaning' to herself, she heard a noise, opened the door and came face to face with the basilisk and died, for anyone who looks straight into a basilisk's eyes will die instantly.

So ended Myrtle's life and she now haunts the bathroom she was killed in, spending her days in miserable self pity. The only thing that seems to excite her is talking about her death. Moaning Myrtle refuses to look beyond herself, she sees only situations that revolve around her. In short, she is extremely self centered. Because Moaning Myrtle only looks at her own problems, all she sees is herself and her unhappiness. However she does find delight in other people's misery, she does not like to see others happy, because SHE is not. So to see others become unhappy like herself comforts her.
