Esteemed British supporting actress and voice artist Miriam Margolyes has worked on radio, television, stage, and in many prestigious feature films. She studied English Literature at Cambridge University with Dr. FR Leavis. On leaving university, she joined the BBC Radio Drama Repertory Company & for a year played everything from little boys to old ladies. That started her love of voice work, which has resulted in a distinguished career recording books & animation features. Her recording of THE QUEEN & I, in which she plays every member of the British Royal Family is the biggest-selling audio book in the world.
She launched her career in her native England but came to the U.S. after winning the Los Angeles Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing Flora Finching in Little Dorrit (1988). After settling in L.A., Margolyes starred in the short-lived CBS television series Frannie's Turn. Then came a number of successful film roles, including, Cold Comfort Farm, End Of Days, Little Shop Of Horrors, and Sunshine. She won a BAFTA Best Supporting Actress Award for The Age Of Innocence (directed by Martin Scorsese).
As a voice artist, Miriam Margolyes provided the characterization for Babe's mother in the Oscar-nominated Babe (1996), as well as voicing the role of the glowworm in James and the Giant Peach (1996), in which she also played one of the wicked aunties. She recently recorded the best-sellers, Stuffed & Troy for Harper Collins & won the Audie award for Edith's Book. She has also won the SWPA Best Recording for Oliver Twist.
She took the role of Professor Sprout in 2002's Harry Potter & The Chamber Of Secrets.The amiable Herbology professor demonstrates the fine arts of repotting and growing hysterically bawling Mandrakes, which prove vital to those Hogwarts students unfortunate enough to cross paths with the deadly Chamber of Secrets monster. On her performance in Harry Potter, she is quoted as saying, "..I am delighted with it - I thought I was terribly good!"
