Hogsmeade. The closest village to Hogwarts, the only fully magical village in Britain.
 |
Hogsmeade is the village closest to Hogwarts, and was supposedly founded by a wizard named Hengist of Woodcroft, in an
attempt to escape from Muggles altogether. Hogsmeade is the only village in Britain to be populated entirely by wizards,
no Muggles allowed and as such is the closest thing to Diagon Alley in terms of the shops it holds. Indeed the village's
proximity to Hogwarts has allowed it to excel Diagon Alley in certain areas, notably the array of sweets found on the
shelves of Honeydukes and the practical jokes to be had at Zonko's Joke Shop. On certain weekends throughout the year all
students of third year or higher are allowed, with permission from parent or guardian, to visit Hosmeade. On these weekends
both Honeydukes and Zonko's are always jam packed with students, as to a lesser extent is the rest of the small village.
Other places of interest are the two pubs the Three Broomsticks and the Hog's Head, the former being the more popular
and catering to a thoroughly more wholesome crowd than the latter, where patrons are often shrouded and hidden in dark
corners. The Three Broomsticks is run by a pretty, curvaceous witch called Madam Rosmerta who has been serving patrons
since before Harry's father was at school. When Harry overhears a conversation in his third year, Rosmerta says she still
has trouble believing Sirius went over to Voldemort, perhaps showing a rare perspicacity since he actually never did.
Also in Hogsmeade is the infamous Shrieking Shack, supposedly the most haunted place in Britain, but actually not
haunted at all. In Harry's father's schooldays it housed a werewolf once a month, and many of the rumours surrounding it
arise either from the noises made by Remus Lupin during his periods of lycanthropic transfiguration or a general attempt
to discourage visitors. Many other shops also line the main street of Hogsmeade, such as Gladrags Wizardwear also of Paris
and London, Dervish and Banges which sells magical apparatus and gadgets, Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop and Madam Puddifoot's
tea shop where Harry and Cho Chang end up on their disastrous first date.
