Crest. A Heraldic device, for showing meaning in the images on a shield.

Hogwarts Crests

A crest, or coat of arms, or heraldic shield, is a device used since the medieval age to represent the bearer and to distinguish soldiers in battle. The images on the shield, and its shape and colour all came to have some significance and meaning and were all given specific heraldic names. The Hogwarts crest is a simple device, depicting the colours and symbol of each of the four Hogwarts houses, one in each corner. An elaborate letter H is placed in the center of the shield, which stands of course for Hogwarts. The Hogwarts motto is 'Draco Dormiens Nunquam Tittilandum' which loosely translates as 'Don't Tickle a Sleeping Dragon'.
